I remember the day when I was categorized as obese so I totally get what’s going through Amy Schumer’s mind after being included in a Plus-Size issue of Glamour Magazine. I remember that day as if were yesterday. I went to the doctor for a physical, as a child, with my mom, and I did the usual. I stepped on the scale to be weighed, and then backed up against the wall to have my height measured. I was 5-feet-and-one-inch tall, which is still my current height today. In a world of full of people, I never felt so alone. Eating disorders are complex. They often coexist with other physical and psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, depression, obsessive behavior, or substance abuse problems. At the time I developed an eating disorder, I was, also, diagnosed with depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. I had not only lost a significant amount of weight, but I developed compulsive rituals connected to food, and was obsessed with calorie restriction and weighing myself. Depression plagued me. Since publicizing my story, I have learned an extraordinary amount about others who have or continue to struggle with similar thoughts and behaviors. One of my main goals in launching Kick the Scale was to raise awareness about body image and eating disorders. As someone who was significantly affected by media, attaining the ideal body type, dieting and exercising to lose weight, and taking it to the extreme, I know how celebrities influence millions of people.
